Budgets without numbers, courtesy of the GOP (Grand Old Party)
I'm sure you, like me, are the kind of person who enjoys studying for stuff at the last minute. Well, maybe not enjoys, but you get the idea. You have an active social life, friends, girlfriend(s), boyfriend(s), or maybe both for those of you are seriously freaky (and when the hell do you find time to sleep?). So it's not that much of a surprise that when test day starts to creep up you likely tell yourself that you'll get around to it, which most likely leads to an all-night cram session in which you pray to gods you probably don't even believe in, let alone worship, that if they get you out of this you'll absolutely, positively NEVER EVER do it again. You may be surprised to know that this impulse doesn't actually leave once you're done with school. For some, it continues well into adulthood.
Recently, President Obama held his second national news conference. You probably heard about it (in fact some 40 million people stopped what they were doing to watch it on TV). During his 1-hour gabfest with the media, he fielded a few questions about his upcoming budget. He commented that his team was doing the best they could and is willing to listen to anyone with ideas, specifically the opposition party. This was pretty much a clarion call to the nation's minority party, the Republicans. They were not going to be outsmarted by the President. They had, in fact, been working on a plan for weeks to counter the President's dangerous, socialist, communist, fascist (yes I realize these philosophies can't possibly co-exist, but this is the GOP were talking about here. Don't let something like logic get in your way. It certainly doesn't for them.) agenda that would bankrupt America's most precious resource: the uber-rich her middle-class families.
So what did they come up with? Well, the chart above, courtesy of BarbinMD over at
Daily Kos, illustrates the GOP's success at their weeks of planning and strategizing.
Yea. That's pretty much the whole damn plan. When asked about the details the Republican Minority Leader, John Boehner of Ohio, said they would be back next week with the specifics (likely once they figure those out themselves).
Looks like the result of an all-night cram session minus the all-night part. Sadly, this is what the GOP has become; a political party completely bereft of ideas, only slogans. Paul Krugman, a Nobel-prize winning economist who writes for The New York Times, recently called them the "party of Beavis and Butthead", which at the time I thought was too harsh, but now I think he was being too kind.

the original regulations on the industry would never allowed banks to invent, let alone give out the subprime loans you're referring to. those loans only became possible with the passage of the commodity futures mod

health care is a leading cause, but the root cause has been the collapse of the housing and mortgage industries. too many people received loans to buy houses that simply weren't good it when the bill came due.
